The only solution to solve broadcast problems is to breakup the exiting network or a single broadcast domain in to multiple smaller broadcast domains called as VLAN. A virtual LAN is a logical grouping of network devices in the same broadcast domain that can span multiple physical segments. All device connected to the hub are in the same collision domain but layer 2 switches network create individual collision domain for each device plugged into each port on the switch.

A VLAN can be defined as a virtual broadcast domain instead of segmenting the broadcast domain with router at layer-3; you segment using switches at layer-2. Logically speaking, VLANs are also subnets. A subnet or a network is a contained broadcast domain. A broadcast that occurs in one subnet will not be forward by default to another subnet. You can add 500 computers in a single broadcast domain. VLAN contain broadcast traffic, where you need a router to move traffic between VLAN.

A device’s membership in a VLAN can be determined by one of three methods, 1. Static, 2. Dynamic, 3. Voice.

Static VLAN: Creating static VLAN is the most common way to create a VLAN and one of the reasons for that is because static VLANs are more secure. When you are dealing with static VLAN, you most manually assign a port on a switch to a VLAN. VLANs configured in this method are typically called port based VLANs or static VLAN are assigned through a RADIUS server for use with IEEE 802.1x.
Dynamic VLAN: In dynamic VLAN the switch automatically assigns the port to a VLAN using information from the user device, such as MAC address, IP address and protocol. The switch then consults a policy server called VLAN membership policy server (VMPS). The VMPS database automatically maps MAC address to VLAN. A dynamic assigned by VMPS. The catalyst 2960 switch can be a VMPS client. Dynamic VLAN have one main advantage over static VLAN, they support plug and play movability.
Voice VLAN: Voice VLAN is unique. They are associated to port that have VOIP phones attached. Some voice phone might have a multi port switch attached to them to allow other devices to connect to the switch via the phone. In this instance, the phone might tog frame to indicate which device is sending the traffic- phone or Pc. Then switch can use to deal with the traffic correctly.

Advantage of VLAN:

· VLAN increase the number of broadcast domains while reduce there size.

· VLAN provide an additional layer 2 security.

· VLAN are faxable in term of how they are used in network equipment.

· VLAN can span across multiple switches using trunk link.

· Allow a logical grouping of user by function not location.

· Make user add, move and change easier.

Implement of VLAN:

· Create the VLAN and assign name.

· Assign switch port to the VLAN.
